Animation tests2

I got a bit lazy when animating the tears, not redrawing the tears each on a different drawing on the boy. It shows!

Feral Children

Definition: human children that live isolated from human contact having no (or little) experience of human care, speech, or what we would regard as normal social interaction. These children are often raised by animals having been abandoned at a young age or run away due to child abuse.
There have been over a hundred cases of children being brought up in the wild.

You can read more about them here, some of the stories are really fascinating:

Hypertrichosis

And on a similar note as before, would you welcome these kids into your friendship circle?
They suffer from a condition known as hypertrichosis (or werewolf syndrome), their whole body covered in thick matted hair. I would think that by a combination of nature and nurture that they not only look different, but probably begin to act different from an early age as well. Being constantly laughed at or stared at is going to affect your personality over time, perhaps making you bitter resentful to society... I imagine I would.

Werewolf Boy

Russian police are hunting a "werewolf boy" - who snarls and bites - after he escaped from a Moscow clinic just a day after being rescued from the wild.

Doctors expressed shock saying he was found living with a pack of wolves in a remote forest in the Kaluga region of central Russia.

The 'werewolf boy' has escaped from a Moscow clinic just a day after he was found. It is thought he was raised by wolves and his toenails are like claws

"He's clearly dangerous to other people," said a police spokesman yesterday.

"He's got typical wolf-like habits and behaviour.

"He has very strong and sharp teeth, which could really endanger someone if he bites."

The boy looks about ten - but after tests conducted by Moscow medics, they believe he maybe much older.

They are puzzled because he appears intelligent but does not seem to speak Russian or any other language. It is suspected he has been running wild for many years.

Such cases are not uncommon in Russia where there have been regular reports of 'Mowgli' children abandoned by their parents who are cared for by animals.

The boy moves around with his legs half bent, said Tvoi Den newspaper. "He was running with wolves and searching for food with them."

Villagers found this "wild creature" in a lair made of leaves and sticks in freezing temperatures and told the police who named him Lyokha, though his real identity is not known.

The 'werewolf boy' looks about ten - but Moscow medics believe he may be much older

"He's dirty, hungry, and looked to have had a hard time," said the police spokesman. "We brought him to a clinic in Moscow.

"It was simply unbelievable. He doesn't react when we call to him." Medics gave him clothes and said that he sprang down the corridor, bursting into his room and devouring his food like an animal.

His nails on his feet were like claws.

After 24 hours he had evaded security men at the clinic and escaped. He is now believed to be on the loose in Moscow region.

"We didn't even manage to complete the proper medical checks. We only succeeded in giving him a shower, cutting his nails and took some blood and other tests," said a doctor.

"It's quite possible he is a dangerous with psychological problems but also a source of viruses and infections."

Little Wolfs Book of Badness

This short animation is about a little wolf who has been sent away by his parents to the big bad wolfs castle to learn how to be bad.

Although the animation is aimed at children, the underlying messages tackle more prominent and darker questions and themes which run through culture and society. The child is not accepted, even by the people who are supposed to love him most (intimate family) and is sent away on his own to learn how to fit into their culture. This runs a parallel with our everyday lives, when someone does not display the correct attributes or appropriate behavior then our society tends to shun them, or send them to a place to learn how to behave like the "normal" (boarding school, mental asylum, prison, church).

Ultimately in the animation the wolf stumbles across some cub scouts who show him kindness, finally being accepted he chooses not to return home to his family, and to instead live with this group of people who share his morals. This animation tackles the subject of being an outsider in a lighthearted way, but the darker messages and hints about culture are clearly there.

Beautiful Losers

If you haven't seen beautiful losers already then download it/rent it/steal it off a mate!
Integral to my brief as well - a group of artists that have felt like outsiders to the world their whole life, managing to make a living for themselves in doing what they love. People are finally starting to see them as something other than "freaks".

You can call me Muk

(Topshop Lookbook AW10)
I think that this is actually where the title for my brief came from, it became embedded in my brain after some online retail therapy. I like the idea that people can chose to be outsiders, to be free from the boundaries of society and escape in a full flowing cape to the outskirts of the woods. Oh and on that note I really should include this, its synonymous with my brief:

How to be alone

I feel that a lot of my most recent posts have been depression related, so here's one with a completely different outlook on being alone. I feel more cheerful already!

Nothing To Lose - Billy Talent

Used to love this song, I think the general themes that run through it are relevant to my project though

Need more friends with wings
All the angels I know
Put concrete in my veins
I’d always walk home alone
So I became lifeless
Just like my telephone

There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change

Never played truth or dare
I’d have to check my mirror
To see if I’m still here
My parents had no clue
That I ate all my lunches
Alone in the bathroom

There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
My notebook will explain
There’s nothing to gain
And I can’t fight the pain

Teach us that it’s just a phase
When I grow up my children
Will probably do the same
Kids just love to tease
I know it put me under ground
At seventeen

There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
My notebook will explain
There’s nothing to gain
And I can’t fight the pain
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
And I just died today

The Suicide Project

A terribly depressing blog filled to the brim with people convinced they are outsiders. I was hoping to find a story but it's mostly poems. I will continue my search...

H. P. Lovecraft

If you have some spare time, give this short gothic story a read by the brilliant H. P. Lovecraft. Reminds me of the brilliance of frankenstein but with more empathy.
I would post it all, but it would be a mammoth post, so give it a read here. It's about four pages long, but well worth a read!

Water

I have fallen in love with the beautiful cinematography and simple narrative of this short film (I know it's 17 minutes but I promise you it's time well spent):

Or you can watch it on vimeo here

Are outsiders always alone?

Thoughts:
Is it possible to be an outsider while socially interacting with society? Or does one have to be totally isolated to be considered a true outsider? Can it be likened to that feeling that you get when you're surrounded by people at a party but still feel alone?

The Outsider Lyrics

Feeling like a loser Feeling like a bum Sitting on the outside Observing the fun Don't get on my bad side I can work a gun Hop into the backseat baby I'll show you some fun These people are weird in here And they're giving me the fear Just because you know my name Doesn't mean you know my game I look myself in the face And whisper "I'm in the wrong place" Is there more to lose than gain If I go on my own again? (On my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside... People are connecting Don't know what to say I'm good at protecting What they want to take Spilt the milk at breakfast Hit me double hard And I grinned at you softly Because I'm a fucking wild card These people are weird in here And they're giving me the fear Just because you know my name Doesn't mean you know my name I look myself in the face And whisper "I'm in the wrong place" Is there more to lose than gain If I go on my own again? (On my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside... All I know is I cannot pretend So I'm sitting on the outside again On my own again Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside the outsider (on my own again) Inside (again)

Marina and the Diamonds

Justice League

First thing I should probably mention that I was unaware of when writing the brief is that there is a group of misfit superheroes that go by the name of the Outsiders.
The Outsiders are a fictional DC comics superhero team. As its name suggests, the team consists of superheroes who allegedly do not fit the norms of the mainstream superhero community, namely the Justice League.

The Story

The team has moved into a new headquarters in Los Angeles, and once again becomes involved in an adventure with the Force of July, ending in Moscow. Villains such as the Duke Of Oil and the Soviet superteam, the People's Heroes, are introduced during this time. The team's adventures take them all over the globe, most notably when the Outsiders' plane is shot down and the team is marooned on a deserted island for three weeks. Tensions rise as Geo-Force tries to resign his leadership and he and Looker give in to temptation. Eventually, they are found and are able to leave.

Even more troubles arise when a detective is hired to look into Looker's private life (now working as a model under the alias of Lia Briggs), who learns of her actual identity of Emily. The detective tries to blackmail her, but she hypnotizes him and makes him leave. However, he is killed shortly afterward and Looker is arrested as a suspect. The Outsiders, fortunately, are able to clear her name.

The Outsiders

Here is the brief I have written in full:

Unit: Design For Interaction and Moving Image

Year: Three

Term: Winter

Brief Date: 17/11/10

Deadlines: 09/02/11

Project Number: 2

Project Title: The Outsiders

Brief:

The definition of an outsider is someone not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc. Society often regards the artist as an outsider. It invokes a sense of being alone, they can be unconnected with regulations bound by society, or be born different leading to a life of bullying or being ignored.

However, being an outsider also means that one is not within an enclosure and has fewer boundaries resulting in a sense of false freedom and fewer limitations imposed on every day life.

Your task is to study an outsider; this can be a group, someone from history or even a fictional character. What is it that sets them apart from the conventional rules of society? Did they choose this life or was it handed to them from birth? Can nature or nurture play a part in creating an outsider? With your gathered research create a documentary showing your findings.

Learning Outcomes:

Demonstrate the ability to work independently (self management and development)

Demonstrate an awareness of differing research methodologies, the use of sketchbooks to record research and the developmental process of ideas and concepts (research)

Demonstrate an awareness of semiological principles (analysis)

Experiment with a variety of media in the realization of ideas (experimentation)

Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate production and presentation techniques (communication and presentation)

Demonstrate an awareness of fundamental principles of visual communication (subject knowledge)

Assessment Requirements:

1 visually documented sketchbook and final piece

Welcome

Hello followers. This blog will document my second brief for my final year in Interaction and Moving Image at LCC.
This brief is slightly different, the task was to write my own. I had many ideas and interests that I was curious about pursuing further but in the end I have settled on The Outsiders.
I will use this as an online sketchbook, giving references to pages of my work and inspiration that you will (hopefully) find interesting. Let the work begin.
